Why the chin matters for cheek perception
Facial proportion is comparative. The cheek looks "full" or "slim" not in absolute terms but relative to the chin and jaw line beneath it.
If the chin is short, recessed, or weak:
- The mid-face looks proportionally fuller
- The neck-to-chin angle looks softer
- The lower face appears less defined overall
Adding chin projection — through filler or implant — often does more for "lower face slimming" than removing buccal fat. The chin's forward projection draws the eye and creates a defined silhouette transition from face to neck.
Filler vs implant
Hyaluronic acid filler. Non-permanent (12–18 months), reversible (can be dissolved with hyaluronidase), low-commitment. Done in clinic in 20 minutes with minimal downtime. Best for first-time chin augmentation patients who want to "try" projection before committing.
Solid silicone implant. Permanent, more dramatic projection possible, no maintenance after initial recovery. Done as a small surgical procedure (combined easily with buccal fat — same operative session, same incision area). Recovery similar to buccal fat alone.
Most of our combined procedures use chin filler as the starting point — patients can see the effect at 30 minutes, decide whether they like it, and choose whether to upgrade to an implant later or stay with filler.
When to consider this combination
- You've looked at your photos and noticed the chin is short or receding
- Your jaw line lacks definition from chin to ear
- Your initial photos sent to us showed clear cheek fullness and chin recession
- You've been told (by us or another surgeon) that buccal fat alone wouldn't give you the lower-face balance you're seeking
When chin augmentation alone is enough
For some patients, chin augmentation alone produces the result they thought required buccal fat removal. Signs that this might be you:
- Mid-cheek isn't actually very full when assessed in profile
- Significant chin recession compared to lower lip projection
- Family history of strong, well-defined jaws but recessed chins
If you fit this profile, we may recommend trying chin filler first — and only proceeding to buccal fat if the chin-only result doesn't go far enough.
Combination timing
Same session: Most common. Chin filler injected at the same clinic visit as buccal fat surgery, before or immediately after. Chin implant placed during the same surgery via separate incision.
Filler first: Try chin filler, see the result at 2 weeks, decide whether buccal fat is still needed. Some patients find chin alone is enough.
Frequently asked questions
How much does chin filler typically cost added to a buccal fat package?
Chin filler is typically a meaningful but not large addition to a buccal fat package. Specific quotes via WhatsApp.
Can chin implant interfere with smiling or talking?
When properly placed, no. Modern silicone chin implants are designed to integrate with the bony chin contour without affecting muscle function. Sensory changes are temporary.
How long does chin filler last?
Modern hyaluronic acid fillers in the chin typically last 12–18 months. The chin area is fairly static (less muscle movement than the lips) which helps the filler persist.
